Practical research guide

What “research use only” means in the UK

It is an intended-use statement—not a quality grade, legal exemption, safety assurance or permission for personal use.

Research and documentation scope

Educational laboratory information only. No medical advice, dosing, injection, administration or personal-use guidance.

The label describes intended use

“Research use only” or “not for human use” signals that a material is offered for laboratory investigation rather than as a consumer medicine. The words do not themselves determine every legal question; substance, presentation, claims, customer, intended use and jurisdiction all matter.

What it does not prove

  • It does not prove identity, purity, sterility or safety.
  • It does not convert a medicine into an unrestricted chemical.
  • It does not authorise administration to people or animals.
  • It does not remove import, workplace or hazardous-substance duties.

Institutional responsibilities

Laboratories should use procurement controls, risk assessment, safety data, trained staff, appropriate storage and disposal procedures. COSHH duties may apply in workplaces, and regulated activities can require additional permissions.

How to check current status

Use official MHRA, Home Office, HSE, HMRC and UK Trade Tariff resources as applicable. Regulatory status can change, and a supplier disclaimer is not a legal opinion.

Frequently asked questions

Does “not for human use” make any sale lawful?

No. Legality depends on the substance, claims, presentation, transaction and applicable rules.

Is research use only a purity standard?

No. Quality must be supported by analytical evidence and specifications.
